3.
Did changes/difference in the video from the
original story enhance the suspense and intrigue? Explain.
In the story, "The Landlady", I believe the Alfred Hitchcock version was more intriguing and mysterious, other than the book we had read. The short movie seemed more "scary" because it gave you a visual of what could more realistically happen. It gave you a picture that they best thought would fit the storyline. In the story, something that left a cliff-hanger was the author never told us what happened after Mr. Weaver found out about the stuffed bodies. We inferred that he had died and was stuffed with the others. Throughout the movie, it showed Mr. Weaver dying and said how the Landlady was going to put him with the others. I personally feel like the changes from the book to the movie didn't really enhance any suspense. It was really the same thing, just different kinds or different explanations to how it came about. Both of these sources were on the same basis with just different details. There are many different opinions that could go about these stories in different formats, called "The Landlady".
ReplyDeleteFor the story "The Landlady", I liked the short movie better because it better explained it. After the book I was confused and couldn't tell that Mr. Weaver had been poisoned. Also I liked how even after the movie there was a guy who said, "Well I've rather lost my appetite. By the way the landlady eventually got caught when she turned Mr. Weaver into a stuffed rug for her entryway." This little added explanation added some humor at the end. Overall I think the short movie was better because of the better showcased mysterious elements and the little bit of humor.
ReplyDeleteSorry I didn't finish. I think suspense was well built in both storylines because of how in both Mr. weaver slowly realized one thing at a time. If he realized it all at once it wouldn't be at all mysterious
ReplyDeleteIn the story, ''The Landlady'', I believe that the movie version was more strange and mysterious than the book version we read. The movie seemed more scary because of the music and the visual of what was happening. The movie showed the house and how normal and comfy it looked and felt, unlike the book which only could describe everything with words, not pictures. The way the landlady talked told you that she was a little off her rocker. The book left you hanging at the end, not telling you that Billy died and was stuffed like the rest of them. The movie told you that he was made into a rug. In the story we had assumed that Mr. Weaver was stuffed and put with Mr. Mulholland and Mr. Temple, but throughout the movie it showed that he didn't die suddenly, but he died slowly. In my opinion, the movie was better than the book because you got to see what was going on instead of guessing what happened.
ReplyDeleteIn the story, "The Landlady", I believe the movie version was more intriguing and mysterious than the book version we had read in class. The movie helped create more suspense because of the type of music they picked for certain scenes, and the way they set up the movie. It showed how the house was very warm and welcoming to the guests that would come, and how the landlady was excited and extremely nice when Billy arrived. In the story though, they can only describe those things with words and you have to come up with what you think it might have looked like. Also, at the end of the story, it leaves you on a cliff hanger where you have to infer yourself that Billy was stuffed by the landlady. Whereas in the movie, it shows you flat out and no inferring is needed. Switching from reading the book to watching the movie definitely created a little more suspense for me because I didn't know what to expect. There could have been something that was changed throughout the story that was different from the book, different characters added or taken away, or even something extra that was added to give the movie more suspense. According to me, the movie was more strange and mysterious because of all the things you got to visually see instead of picturing them inside your head.
ReplyDeleteIn the story "The Landlady" , I find that the movie version was more suspenseful than the book because it's more scary and creepy to see the landladies face and how she interacts with Billy. Also you see Billy pretty much die. The music was also a part that put you on the "edge of your seat". The movie version is jsut more visual. In the story it's just not as suspenseful because you can really only use words and you have to use your imagination from those words. Some differences were that in the movie Billy was 22. Also, Alford Hitchcock said at the end that Billy was made into a rug. In the story he was 17 and we assumed that since she stuffed the parrot and dachshund and that she was saying that Christopher and Gregory were just upstairs we assume that she'll stuff Billy to. All in all I think the short movie was better and more strange and mysterious becasue of all the images and sounds that you see.
ReplyDeleteI much more enjoyed the book, for I could make up the voices and colors as I please. As for suspense though, the movie wins by a landslide. With the movie, the director was allowed to add dramatic pauses, music, and character tone to the story. The book however, used sentences and word choice to darken the mood and to make the reader read slower.
ReplyDeleteSome differences that I saw from the book is that in the movie, when signing the register, Billy is offered a pen instead of using his own, He noticeably gets poisoned in the movie, as opposed to the book that simply stated his tea tasted of bitter almonds.
The register is handed to Billy instead of being on the piano, Bill never touches the dog in the movie, and the breed also differs from the book. Also, a bar scene was added in the beginning of the movie for some reason. (Possibly suspense building.)
Overall, the book and the movie were both equal in their own respective ways.
Both the movie and the story were both very intriguing but I think that the book was a bit more creepy. In the book you were able to know what the people were thinking and was able to understand more of the plot. On the other hand the movie had a scene where the landlady was dancing with the dead people and you saw the man die. All these changes from the original story made a little more suspense, just seeing the man die crept me out. In the end though both of them created suspense in their own way.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the movie built up the best suspense. It was more interesting than the book. The build up to the land lady killing him was very suspenseful. I was on my edge seat wondering what was going to happen next. The movie you could actually see what was going on at the bed and breakfast. When she told him that she stuffs all her little pets and you could really see what she was talking about was scary. Both the movie and story had great suspense and I enjoyed both of them very much. Overall I enjoyed the movie more because you could really see what was going on.
ReplyDeleteI believe that the book had the most suspense. In the movie the landlady talks as if Christopher Muholland and Gregory Temple were still alive and in the book she hardly mentions them and it makes it more mysterious about where they are and why Mr. Weaver hadn't seen them. Also in the short movie it says Mr. Weaver is 22. In the book he is 17 plus he actually goes to sleep in the movie and in the book the landlady poisons him on the first night. In all I enjoyed both the book and the short movie.
ReplyDeleteI believe the book and the movie had their advantages. The book gives us details that the book doesn't tell us, like, how the land lady looks from head to toe and says"just like you". The movie can't bring that point across as well. The movie helped me visualize things like what the land lady looked like. The movie also shows how Mr. Weaver was pretty smart. I think it added extra suspense and mystery too. For example when she is playing the hymn in the bedroom. True to say, I had no idea what a dachshund was ether. In all I like the book and the movie.
ReplyDeleteI think that the movie was more suspenseful, and intriguing. The film had more details, adding on to the suspense and causing the person watching to think about what could happen next. However, in the book, we do not actually see Mr. Weaver die. That also created suspense. The film was easier to pay attention to and you caught on to the hints Hitchcock was giving, such as the tea. Also, in the movie, the music in the background helped create a creepy mood. In the book, the reader has to picture everything that is happening, so music in the background adds to the mysterious feeling. Both the movie and the book were mysterious and very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI think that the movie, "The Landlady" was more suspenseful and intriguing than the book because the movie allows you to see what is actually going on inside the Bed and Breakfast. In the book, we didn`t know that the landlady sounded and looked like she did in the movie. Throughout the movie and the story, she kept giving Mr.Weaver hints about what happened to Christopher Muholland and Gregory Temple. In the story,it`s harder to have a visual of what is happening instead of actually seeing what each person looks like and how the really act. When the landlady said that she likes to play with her pets and that she stuffs all of them, that made Mr.Weaver and the person watching the movie or reading the story, realize what she does to the people who stay at her Bed and Breakfast and it reveals what she does to them after they are poisined by her tea. I think that the movie was for sure more suspensful then the book.
ReplyDeleteI think the Video was the more suspenseful because you could see what the Land Lady did and how see did it. The video also did add somethings like Mr. Weaver is 22, but in the book it says he is 17. Mr.Weaver also dies in the video and not in the book. Overall the video added a bit more of suspense because it showed what the Land Lady looked like and talked like.
ReplyDeleteI thought the book story was more interesting. The video wasn't as mysterious but you wouldn't have been able to guess the landlady was a killer in the video. In " The Landlady" in the video the changes were just small and had nothing to do with the story. Suspense was created by the story was in moments were Billy was about to open the door to the room but its locked and multiple other things.
ReplyDeleteIn Alfred Hitchcock's version of "The Landlady" there were many flaws to it according to the original story written in the book. First, Billy's age was not 22 in the book he was 17. Another thing that was wrong was that Billy didn't actually spend that night. I will admit that I thought the video had more suspense, but I can not get over the fact that Hitchcock's version had many additions and changes from the original story. I also liked that Hitchcock showed what happened to Billy instead of Dahl's version of just ending the story with the landlady answering his question. My point is that I think Hitchcock should have been closer to the book even though he made a lot of suspense, but Dahl should have told the reader more of what happened like how Billy was stuffed in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI think the movie was more intriguing because I could see what was going on. Being able to see what was going on, in my opinion, added more suspense. I like how they created suspense by showing Billy trying to open the door, but it was locked. I also think suspense was created when he started to drink the tea because you knew something tasted funny just by his reaction. The biggest change that I think created suspense was how he actually showed Billy dying from the poison. this left me wondering what happened to him. At the end, Hitchcock relieved the suspense by telling the viewers what happened to Billy and the landlady.
ReplyDeleteI think the short movie was more intriguing than the book. I believe the movie was more intriguing because you had a visual on what happened to Billy. There was more suspense in the movie because you could what the Landlady looked like and the music in the back round made the movie way more creepy. Another thing that you got to see was Billy dying. The movie made me sit on the edge of my seat because you can see all the animals that were stuffed. There were also some differences in the movie and the book. In the book Billy was 17 and he was 22 in the movie and also, in the movie he spent the night one night and in the book he didn't. I liked both the book and the movie, I just thought that the movie was better and more suspenseful.
ReplyDeleteI think the movie "The Landlady" was more intriguing and mysterious than the book "The Landlady." This is because the movie gave a visual of what was going on instead of your imagination. The book I thought was more suspenseful though because it didn't tell you what actually happened to Billy. The book just ended and you had to infer he had gotten poisoned while the movie said he was stuff and used as a rug. They both did pretty good job of making a the landlady a creepy person though.
ReplyDeleteI think the alfred hitchcock version of the story is more intriuguing beacuse it gives me more of a picture of what is going on. the storys music adds more suspense.Yes because the story didnt show enough detail or something like that.
ReplyDeleteI think the short movie was more intriguing than the story "The Landlady" because you can see a visual of what happens to Billy. You also in the video how creepy she was. In the movie you see the animals that had been stuffed, when in the book you had to imagine what they looked like. I liked the video better because you got to see what happened to Billy in the end and the music in the background adds suspense.
ReplyDeleteI think the movie was more intriguing because you can make a better prediction on what might happen. The movie created suspense because in the one scene where Billy tries to open the door, you don't know what will happen. In the story Billy's thoughts also creates suspense because now you know that he also realizes that something isn't right about the landlady. I feel like the movie enhanced the suspense more especially at the end because in the story it never told how Billy died but in the movie you can actually see him start slowing down and dying which adds more suspense where as in the story you had to think about what would have happened.
ReplyDeleteI think the movie version of "The Landlady" was more intriguing because you can see whats happening. When your just reading, you can only guess whats happening. You make your own visual of whats happening in your head. In the book it leaves you on a cliff hanger, but in the movie it shows you what actually happens. The sound of music adds suspense because certain noises mean something is going to happen.
ReplyDeletei beleive the video was more intruging and mysterouis because of the us of people and pictures for everything unlike the book.suspense was created in the video with the pictures and movement of how it was supose to be in our minds. the most suspense filled part was when he was drinking the tea and he just started to freeze.there was a few differnces between the book and video. with how he died after the tea and how he kept o nlooking in the book.the sounds add suspense to the video because the book never could add the sound suspence. also in the begening at the restrant was not in the book.
ReplyDeleteThe movie version of "The Landlady" was more mysterious and intriguing. When someone reads a book, the pictures in your head are made from how you interpret the text. However, when someone watches a movie, everyone has the same pictures. This helps create more suspense. Most people interpret from the story that Mr. Weaver died fast, but the movie shows everyone that he dies slowly. More suspense was created in the movie also because of the music. The differences between the book and movie created more suspense because of visual aid.
