Solve the mystery...

Solve the mystery…

After the death of Poe’s wife Virginia in 1847, Poe was deeply saddened.  Poe continued to work, but suffered from poor health and financial issues.  On September 27, 1849, Poe was supposedly on his way to Philadelphia. On October 3rd, Poe was found in great distress in Baltimore.  He was taken to Washington College Hospital and later died on October 7th.  Poe’s last words were, “Lord, help my poor soul.”  Poe’s cause of death was said to be “congestion of the brain,” although his actual cause of death has been the topic of much speculation.

Visit the website below to read the published theories surrounding Poe’s death.  Choose a theory you believe to be the cause of Poe’s death and comment on how Poe died and the evidence you read to support that theory. Comments should be at least 4-6 sentences in length.

  1. I believe that poe died from complete saddness after the death of Virginia. He believed that he must die now so that he could be together with her again. People keep saying that hes drunk, but he was not. He was just so sad and depressed that he could not function anymore. He would walk around thinking of Virginia that he would seem drunk but no one could tell what was really going on. He was insane because he thought himself as a curse because every women he loved seemed to die of TB. He didnt let himself get close to anybody for fear that they would die. Because of this he became lonely, sad, and depressed.

  2. I think Poe died from being so depressed and sad and guilty of what he thought he did. I think it would be very hard to feel that any women he got close to or was in his life and very close to him would die of TB. I think he thought he was some curse. I think maybe sometimes he drank because he was sad and lonely, sometimes I think he drank to much to the point where he did start to go insane and see things. I think it go to the point where it was to much and he just wanted to die. He was very depressed and lonely.

  3. I believe Poe died from depression and despair. After having all the women in his life that he had gotten close to die from the same decease, the last thing that he wanted was to have the same thing happen to Virginia. Once it did, he broke down. I think he would drink so much to try and forget about all of the sadness he was going through. It was possibly a cure in his mind. This might be the reason why he would always go insane and could possibly be the start to his brain tumor. He was under so much stress that it could have triggered a part inside his brain. Having a brain tumor and drinking a lot each day, might be the reason why he just wanted to die because he thought this was the only way out of all this. With all this going on, Poe became very heavy-hearted, weak, and lonely.

  4. I think Poe died from a broken heart. I think that he thought he was a curse for all the women in his life. After he lost his wife to TB, he was so depressed and sad that his heart couldn't handle the stress. I believe that he died because of his belief that he was the cause of his wife's death

  5. I think Poe's death was from a combination of depression and sickness. Because he was depressed, I think he drank because that was the only way he could get his mind off of how many women that were close to him died from TB. He probably thought he was a curse to all of them. Also, the drinking could of done damage to his liver causing him to get sicker and sicker. I believe Poe being physically and mentally sick were the biggest reasons of his death.

  6. Edgar Allan Poe died for a reason no one knows. There are numerous possibilities to why he died, but nobody knows the truth. In my opinion, I think Poe died of depression, a broken heart, and brain issues. Edgar Allan Poe's closest women in his life, such as his mother, step-mother, and wife all died of TB and he felt as if it was him as a curse. After these horrid events, he became very depressed and saddened. That's part of my theory to why he died. Poe has always been a little out there and considered insane. A lot of people believe that he had brain trauma and that didn't help him. I don't believe he had any specific diseases that could have affected his death. For those reasons, I believe Poe died of depression, saddened heart, and brain trauma.

  7. After reading all these different stories and theories I have come to believe that Edger Allen Poe died of sadness and cholera. Even though the cholera did most of it he was probably more sickened and depressed with all the death and sorrow that was in his life. He couldn't take it anymore. In the letter he sent to his mother in law he even told her that he had the disease and couldn't stand to live with this (curse) any longer. He explained that after the death of his beloved late wife, there was nothing for him to do in life. Yes he had a disease and he probably couldn't have cured it, but I don't think he fought back and tried to help himself. He let the disease get to him so he didn't have to live in the horrible world we live in today.

  8. Though nobody knows, I think that he was overly depressed. The pain he must of went through after loosing so much must of broke his heart. Though all the other theories make sence, this is what stood out to me. He was also very sick, and I'm pretty sure that when your depressed, your immune system slows down. So whatever sickness he had, his immune system must have been to slow for it. That is my theory about Edgar Allan Poe.

  9. I think that Edger Allen Poe died of a brain tumor said in the death clues. It was said that he had many other diseases that could have a part in his death. I think that Edgar Poe knew something was wrong that is why he went to the hospital where he died. This could explain how he came up with all of these stories that he made. That is how i think Edgar Allen Poe died.

  10. I believe Edger Allen Poe died of a brain tumor and other illnesses. He had a lot of times where he went insane and I think this also contributed to his death. One article said that he went insane ten days before leaving for his trip. I believe this was because of the pain he was feeling. Also, the brain tumor could have deteriorated his brain causing him to act this way and kill him slowly. They didn't have the technology we have today to try and cure or slow down the tumor. Therefore, I believed he died of a tumor.

  11. I think that Poe died because of a brain tumor, but I also think that since he drank a lot of alcohol that it contributed in his death. Since he had the tumor people had said that if he drank or had a stimulant that there were side affects of insanity. Edgar Allen Poe probably felt that he was going to die and arranged his will and such before leaving his mother-in-law in Richmond. It says that near his death he couldn't function correctly such as he couldn't hold a pen without difficulty. This shows that he most likely did have the brain tumor or another brain disease that can greatly affect someone. Edgar Allen Poe probably died of alcohol indigestion, but mostly of the fact that he had a brain tumor.

  12. I believe Poe died of some sort of brain disease. In one of the text sections it states that doctors believes he had a brain tumor and whenever Poe drank any sort of alcohol he would talk and act insane. I believe that when he got drunk in Baltimore, this disorder from the alcohol had an effect worse than the others and it proved fatal.

  13. I think that Poe died of depression and sadness. He lost his wife and he had money and mental problems. Poe had a brain tumor and I bet he died because of it. Or since drinking alcohol made him go insane everything caught up to him and it killed him. There are many possibilities of his death and still today no one knows what happen to Poe.

  14. I believe Poe died not only from severe depression, but delirium as well. He was struggling to deal with the passing of his wife, and the fact that the cause of her death was TB, like his mother and step-mother, caused him to believe that he was cursed. Though alcohol could've played a large role in his death, Poe was already experiencing trauma and was trying to cope. His speech was incoherent and he was convinced his wife was 'waiting' for him, which considering she was dead, was not true. Edgar Allan Poe's death remains a mystery, but my theory is depression and delirium were the two main causes.

  15. I believe that Mr.Poe died of a broken heart. They said that he had an odd heart beat. The brain tumor belief is all mumbo jumbo. He was all depressed and sad because all the women he loved died of disease. Stress causes the heart to race so I would think that his heart would dimmer over time. THUS, stating my assumption of Edgar Allen Poe's Death.

  16. I believe Poe died from depression from losing his wife. It would be hard for anyone to lose a family member, but she was his only family that he had. He had been struggling with losing his wife and trying to go places just made it worse. Poe's death is still a mystery, but I believe it was from depression.

  17. poe died from different reasons and different theory's people are trying to find out. here is my own theory. he was In pain from the loss of his wife. he started drinking non stop to lose the pain he felt. he never noticed how bad it was for him cause he was never sober. enough of the drinking for so long started to cause brain problems. he ended up with some sort of brain disease that was untreatable and died because of it. all of this to forget the pain he had for his love one.

  19. There are many reasons Poe could have died but I believe he had past away because he had a brain tumor and also the depression from his wife passing. The main part of it was probably the tumor but depression was another part in it. It is always hard to loose someone in your life, especially a family member and the only family he had. What made everything even worse was that he drank too! Drinking is never the right path to go when you are sick like that. I think the reason he started drinking was to get his mind off of him loosing so many girls to TB. It also stated that when he drank, it made him go insane. No one still has figured out how the true way he died and it will remain a mystery to all.

  20. Poe had many physicle and mental problems. I believe that Poe died from basic sickness. He just had a fever or something simple like that. I believe this because most of the messages sent to his mother in law, like from his physician were about him and his satate of health. So I think he died from a simple illness. [Turned in 2 days late]
