Miep Gies

Miep Gies

Miep Gies helped hide and protect the Frank family, the Van Pelt family, and Fritz Pfeffer. Read about her death at the following link: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/12/world/europe/12gies.html?_r=0&pagewanted=print
Respond to the following questions after reading the article:
·         What new information did you learn about Miep that we did not learn in “The Diary of Anne Frank”?

·         Miep claims that she was not a hero. What do you believe about this statement?

  1. that mr.frank asked miep to protect them, and she didnt think twice about saying that she would, and the fact that she doesnt think that she is a hero is crazy to me! she could have been arrested and killed if she would have been caught giving them food and supplies. they wouldnt have survived half as long without her.

  2. Some things I learned about Miep was that she was adopted. I also learned that Miep was just a Dutch name given to her when she was adopted, her real name was, Hermine. One last thing I learned about it her was that she was a member of a Roman Catholic family. I think Miep is a very strong hero. She risked her own life for others which is always an act of bravery. She could've died from bringing them supplies and helping them, but she really showed she cared. Without her we wouldn't probably know about Anne Frank and the rest of her family without Miep encouraging Mr. Frank to publish her diary. Miep is the whole reason, so I do really think that Miep is a hero.

  3. There were many things that talked about Meip in this article that was not in the story. The thing that stood out to me the most was that she was adopted by a Dutch family. I also learned that she married someone who was Dutch. Something very interesting was Miep and another woman once stayed in the Secret Annex with the families to see how miserable it really was Miep claims that she was not a hero. I totally disagree. Miep took care of eight people hiding, having to get food, clothes, blankets, almost everything for them. While doing all that, on top of being a secretary at Ottos jam store, she was risking her life as a pleasure. How could someone ever believe she wasn't a hero?

  4. While reading the article, I learned that, among other things, Miep was adopted, and had originally been named Hermine. She claimed to not be a hero. I disagree. she hid eight Jews at the risk of her life while running Otto Frank's business. While Miep said that she was just doing the same thing as many other good people, she and those other people saved lives and each qualifies as a hero.

  5. I learned that Miep was adopted and so am I, so I was surprised to find this out. I also learned that her real name is Hermine, but Miep was the name that she was given when she was adopted. Miep claims that she was not a hero and for these reasons I disagree. She risked her life to save 8 people and she didn't think twice about it, she was their helper giving them food and clothes, she also continued to work at Ottos even though that is where hey were hiding. Because she saved these people she is a hero just like all the other people that risked their life to save the Jews.

  6. I learned that Miep was presented with West German's highest civilization medal in 1989 and was knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1996. I disagree with her not being a hero. I think anyone who risks her own life to help another family trying to escape death, is a hero.

  7. While reading this article, I learned that Miep traveled all around the world while in her 80s, speaking against intolerance. Because of her great help in inspiring others and her great determination, the West German government presented her with its highest civilian medal in 1989. This was a huge honor for her. I disagree with Miep not being a hero. She put her and her families life in danger just to help Anne's family. That was a choice that changed history forever.

  8. I learned that Miep was adopted and given a Dutch name while reading this article. Her real name was Hermine. She was from Austria and suffered from food shortages as a kid. She also was knighted by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands. I don't agree with Miep saying she isn't a hero. Even though she didn't save the Frank's and Van Pel's live she still tried with the risk of being caught and killed.

  9. I learned that miep was living with a roman catholic church and was then sent off the live in Amsterdam then adopted by family I always thought that she was born in Amsterdam and lived there since. miep is a hero in many peoples eyes. in others she a is a evil person. just about everybody sees miep as the hero for helping save peoples life. she risked her own life to protect jews in my eyes miep is a great hero.

  10. I learned that Miep was not born in Amsterdam and was brought there by a foster family. I believe that Miep is a hero because she risked her own live and safety for her friends. Miep says she isn't a hero because she thinks that people will do the right thing when the times comes.

  11. Miep Gies sounds like the most caring and loving person in the world. She says she is not a hero, just doing what was right, but the way that she took care of these people is quite incredible. She sheltered three families for more than two years above a business that had many people coming in and out of everyday. So she wasn't a hero, she was a saint. I don't know one person in this world that would do such a thing to help someone. I learned that she was sent to Australia where she learned to help people that are in need. Good thing she did, because if she didn't then who knows what would have happened to the Franks. Miep Gies is the most caring person I have ever heard of, and I'm glad to know there is people like that in this world.

  12. I believe that Miep is a hero. She risked her life and others just to hide her boss and other families that needed to be held secretive. Something new I learned was when she was 11 she moved to live with a Dutch family. Also the name Miep was a nickname given to her.

  13. I believe Meip is a hero. She risked death to help some people she knew. She had to run a business and help take care of the people in the secret annex. It must have been very stressful for her to do that. I'm not sure if I could have done all she did. All I can say is thank you.

  14. Miep Gies was a hero. Without her help and confidentiality, the Frank Family would not have survived for as long as they did in the Secret Annex. She could've at any point, turned the family in for money, but her love for the family was too strong. Miep was a loving and caring lady, and indeed a hero. She risked her job, marriage and life while caring for the Frank Family, and that is a hero.

  15. First, something that I learned about Miep Gies was that she was adopted into a dutch family. Also, I didn't know she lived to be 100!Next,she was a hero.Miep practically kept those three families alive for two years. She brought them food and things that they need or even sometimes wanted.Miep risked her life everyday to help save theirs while knowing the consequences for hiding them.Miep Gies was a hero.

  16. One thing I learned about Miep Gies was that she was adopted. I disagree with Miep's statement on not being a hero, I believe that Miep was a hero because if it weren't for her, we wouldn't have known what it was like for a jewish person in hiding. The diary showed us what it was like for a person in that situation, if they were scared, if they felt alone, things like that. So with that being said I do think Miep was a hero.

  17. I learned that Miep was adopted, and that she was brought to Amsterdam by her adopted family. It is crazy to think how different life would have been for the group if they didn't have Miep. She claims that she is not a hero. That is astounding considering all that she did.She risked her life everyday for these 8 people, ran Otto's business, and didn't get caught. She risked her whole life for these people. It is amazing to know that there are such sweet people in the world. Miep is a hero.

  18. I believe Miep is a hero. Even though she says she is not, she is. She risked her life to save 8 Jews from the Nazis for two years. Although, they were found, Miep did all she could. Those two years, she had to deal with her life and 8 others. If these things aren't heroic then I don't know what is. jNo matter what people say Miep is a hero.

  19. I believe that miep gies is a hero because she helped out the frank family and the van pels without question. miep is really brave, what if the police brought her to jail, then what?

  20. I believe that Miep is a hero for what she did. One thing that I didn't know about her was that she was adopted. Miep does not consider herself a hero, which she should for all that she did. She risked her life just to help others. If it weren't for her, they wouldn't have survived as long as they did. She could have turned in the family for all the money but she didn't, she helped them as much and as long as she could.

  21. Miep does deserve the title hero. She helped protect a bunch of people who were worth money. She was courageous and brave. What if she was executed, or sent to prison?

  22. Miep helped many people other then just the people in the secret Annex. Even though she doesn't think that she deserves the title of hero I think that she does. She risked death or jail for those individuals' lives. I learned that because of what Miep did she was given a high award for hiding them after the war and was knighted. She also travelled in her later years telling the harsh ,yet true story of the Holocaust to students where she travelled.

  23. Meip was not Jewish but still could have been take away for harboring them. She didn't know what would happen to her if she was taken away. She still helped them though, and at the thought of what they might do to someone who helped the Jews is sickening and with that I don't know if I could risk my life to do that, but she did. The sad part for her is when they were taken. That would have made me think I failed. She was awarded and knighted for her deed. Then she also spent time traveling and telling her stories and died. I do think she was a hero. (late but was absent when assignment was given )
